When Ataya participated in the 2024 Communications Competition, its products had already been commercialized. Even so, the competition process was still quite rewarding. For example, the organizers and sponsors provided very practical and valuable resources, and helped the team focus more on product positioning and market strategy. During the competition, mentors and judges from the industry and investment community (VC) provided specific and professional advice on products, technical routes, and business models, helping them to clarify market needs and development priorities at an early stage. In addition, the industry exposure and personal connections accumulated during the competition also played a positive role in subsequent contacts with partners.

Participate in the Communications Contest and Open the Door to Future Business Opportunities

Ataya won the championship in the communication competition and also got valuable marketing exposure opportunities, successfully attracted attention from the industry and the media, and significantly improved the visibility of the brand and products. In addition, it also opened up opportunities for further cooperation with many mentors companies, laying the foundation for their subsequent product introduction and market verification. It can be seen that a platform like the communication competition is not only a competition, but also an important opportunity to help new startup teams accelerate their growth and connect with the industry ecosystem. For teams that are just starting out, it is a stage that is worth investing in.

At present, Ataya Chorus has been tested by many enterprises and institutions, and has received many positive comments. These collaborations not only enhance the credibility of its technology, but also greatly accelerate the pace of product implementation. These substantial business connections and market feedback are the most valuable and most recommended gains to other teams during the competition.

Looking back on the original intention of participating in the communication competition, it was to let more people see the core technology created by Ataya, to gain more exposure opportunities from the media and industry through this competition platform, and to establish connections with potential partners. For them, this is not only a stage to showcase products, but also an important milestone in transforming technology prototypes into commercial solutions. During the competition, Ataya received valuable feedback from academia, industry and investment circles, and these suggestions were of great help to their subsequent adjustment of product positioning and market strategy.

For the teams that are about to participate, Ataya reminds everyone: Be pragmatic in facing the questions and suggestions of the judges and mentors, and be brave to share the teams vision and challenges. You will find that this is a very valuable process, which not only improves the teams product maturity, but also has the opportunity to open up more possibilities for future cooperation and resources.

Riding on the high-speed train of 5G private network demand, providing users with safer and more efficient solutions

Ataya also shared its observations on the 5G market. From the time of participating in the competition to now, it has been clearly felt that the market demand for lightweight and quickly deployable 5G private network solutions continues to rise, especially in enterprise fields, temporary deployment scenarios and mission-critical communications. As a portable 5G private network solution, Ataya Chorus has also responded to these market changes and actively promoted the integration with key peripheral technologies. For example, the team recently cooperated with Kyocera and Ecrio to a complete end-to-end critical communication private network solution to enhance the application capabilities in high-reliability fields at the same time, it also established cooperation with international giant Palo Alto Networks to strengthen Ataya Chorus zero-trust security mechanism to respond to users increasing demand for private network security.

In the future, Ataya will continue to strengthen the adaptability of Ataya Chorus in vertical application markets (such as manufacturing, energy, medical, etc.), promote deeper application integration and local deployment, and accelerate the scale and speed of private network implementation.

Student team ToFEye moves from the competition stage to the technology demonstration field: taking the first critical step through the communications competition to allow more people to see the future potential of students

Champion of the 2023 Communications Competition Connected Future Challenge

In the 2023 Communications Competition, Professor Zhang Wanrong from the academic community led his students to form the "Wild Boar Tofu" team and competed with their work ToFEye. With their work that combined non-contact ranging technology and an intelligent interpretation system, they stood out and won the championship of the "Connected Future Challenge". At the same time, they also successfully made this technology that detects falls in the bathroom, abnormally long stays, and other issues that endanger patient safety. From a simple student team research, it gradually entered the hospitals empirical field. Currently, it is working hand in hand with enterprises to promote this technology into a complete product, which has become the best example of "starting from school and successfully entering the market."

ToFEyes success in the communications competition did not come overnight. In fact, Professor Zhang Wanrong has been leading his student team to take on challenges for many years and has participated in the communications competition, an important domestic information and communications competition, many times. As early as 2017, he launched an IoT walking aid for the visually impaired that combines smart glasses with a smart cane. In 2018, he also launched a dedicated drug identification system to address the pain point of visually impaired people having difficulty identifying medication. In 2019, he launched an upgraded version combined with smart glasses, which greatly improved the usability of this system.

The competition is not just a competition of technical skills, but also a test of commercial feasibility.

When talking about why he chose to participate in the Communications Contest, Professor Zhang Wanrong said frankly: "Compared to the special competitions on campus, the Communications Contest not only requires technological innovation, but also emphasizes practicality and market potential." It is precisely this characteristic that made him decide to lead students to challenge this competition that is closer to industry needs. Of course, the competition requirements of the Communications Contest are indeed closer to the industry, including submitting a briefing to explain the business model, and also needing to face corporate evaluation directly. In the process, you can actually participate in the results exhibition and communicate with the industry. Each link tests the teams ability to commercialize technology and implement it.

These processes are not easy for students, but they are extremely valuable experiences, especially for students who are willing to continue to promote the development of related technologies and eventually enter the market in the future. It is a must. Professor Zhang also believes that the reason why many students works remain in the laboratory stage and ultimately cannot enter the market is that they lack "opportunities to prove themselves", and the Communications Contest is a stage that provides a test of the actual feasibility of technology. In the past, the student teams he led also gradually adjusted the technology, clarified market needs, and found the direction of commercialization in this process.

Corporate partnership opportunities become commercialization accelerators

Professor Zhang also mentioned that ToFEye, for example, was developed to meet the needs of medical and care institutions in an aging society, and its future application potential is highly anticipated. Later, due to its participation in the communications competition, the ToFEye team not only gained more exposure opportunities, but also successfully matched corporate partners to promote commercialization and demonstration. Currently, this product has been field tested in hospitals and will be expanded to other care institutions in the future.

ToFEye的感測器可廣泛的應用在醫院與照護機構。

Different from a simple technology display, the ToFEye team has locked in actual needs from the beginning, combined with corporate resources, and let the product really enter the application field. Because of the opportunity to actually cooperate with enterprises through the communication competition, the rich experience accumulated in the process has made the team more confident in subsequent product development and market expansion. At present, the ToFEye team continues to strengthen the stability and accuracy of the product and expand the application map through more empirical fields. Professor Zhang believes that "market demand is always changing, and we must change with it." Only by constantly optimizing technology can we truly transform the work from academic achievements to products that solve real problems.

If you are interested in market development, the Communications Competition will be a good starting point

As a "practitioner" in technology research and development, Professor Zhang Wanrong also made suggestions based on his many years of experience in leading student teams: "If you are not limited to the field of academic research, but hope that the subject of your research can be seen by the society and recognized by the industry, and become a technology that is truly put into application, please be sure to participate in the communication competition." Unlike other types of competitions, the communication competition has been connected with the industry for many years. For students, it is a valuable opportunity to receive the baptism of industry practice. Whether it is the preparation of briefings, face-to-face communication with judges, to actual dialogue with enterprises and exploration of needs, each different link may become a driving force for the team to continue to grow and find the future direction.

The ToFEye team also used its own experience to prove that through the experience of the communication competition, even a student team can actually enter the market, solve the real pain points of the industry, and real value. The starting point of all this is also from the communication competition.

From disaster prevention technology to ESG carbon management, Keshu Technology: Starting from the communication competition, we found a way to survive

2022 Communications Competition Networked Future Challenge Excellence Award

In 2022, Compass Arrow, a three-person team that brings together a doctor of telemetry image processing, a full-end engineer, and a business model developer, participated in the communications competition with the goal of achieving ESG life in a climate change environment. They won the Excellence Award in the "Connected Future Challenge" with a "Real-time Interactive 3D Disaster Relief Mapping System" that integrates drone aerial photography, cloud computing, and 3D real-time modeling technology, and accumulated valuable experience in the future development of the market and marketing models from the competition process.

Three years later, Compass Arrow also started with a new company name "Keshu Technology", echoing the companys vision and brand spirit with "Let trees have water, let the environment thrive". At the same time, the companys core business has also transformed from "disaster prevention application scenarios" to "ESG sustainable application solution provider", becoming one of the few technology platforms in Taiwan that focuses on natural resource monitoring and carbon investment assessment. In an interview, Compass Arrow CEO Lin Diyi admitted that the companys entrepreneurial process was not easy, but fortunately starting from the communications competition allowed us to stand more firmly. Through the competition, we not only obtained resources for subsequent development, but also further found future development directions and potential customers, allowing Compass Arrow to transform into the current Compass Arrow.

Unwilling to be restricted in development, keep up with the ESG trend and find a new way out

Keshu Technology originally focused on real-time image data analysis based on drone photography, mainly providing the government with three-dimensional modeling and disaster relief support at disaster sites. However, the team soon discovered that the demand for such applications was mostly dominated by the public sector, and the source of cases was unstable, which also limited the scale of business. Then in 2023, with the implementation of ESG regulations and the outbreak of carbon inventory demand, they also keenly observed the trend of "corporate tree planting" and the monitoring and statistical needs of related data, so they decided to turn to building a "forest carbon management platform" to provide companies with tree planting monitoring, carbon sink pre-assessment and other services.

In the past, corporate tree planting often took the form of "taking photos on Arbor Day and writing relevant materials into ESG reports." Keshu Technology believes that it is more meaningful to allow these planted trees to be truly tracked and managed and become quantifiable natural assets. Therefore, it has subsequently developed to assist companies in establishing a forest carbon data database, including survival rate, tree species distribution, growth curve, and even image analysis and evaluation before future carbon rights investment, truly reflecting the value created by ESG.

Currently, this platform combines drone photography, satellite telemetry and AI analysis technology to help companies implement the most difficult "E (environment)" project in ESG reports, truly achieving "not only planting trees, but also making them effectively visible". This entry point also allows Keshu Technology to enter the important "data supply chain" in the ESG ecosystem, helping investors or companies to improve investment evaluations related to carbon rights. At present, they have cooperated with many companies and consulting companies to use multi-source images for natural asset data modeling, and are also expanding overseas such as the forest carbon market in Southeast Asia.

The real gain from participating in the communications competition is not the prize, but the opportunity

Talking about the gains after participating in the communication competition, Lin Diyi believes that they are the same as all new startup teams that have just embarked on the road of entrepreneurship. They all have the direction they want to work hard at the beginning, but after actually starting, they often face the dilemma of "not finding a way out". The communication competition has undoubtedly become a key "guide".

For the Keshu Technology team, the recognition of winning the communication competition award is not only more media exposure and initial start-up funds, but more importantly, the practical advice given by professional judges during the competition and the subsequent introduction of contacts. Lin Diyi also mentioned that during the competition, a judge from Qualcomm took the initiative to pay attention to us, and later recommended us to another international competition. Later, he also helped us to connect with the digital department and other potential customers, so that Keshu has the opportunity to get in touch with the real needs of the market.

He also emphasized that "the judges vision is often longer-term than the current market development", so they can better understand whether what the startup team is working on has potential and value, and can better guide the team to connect with the government and enterprises. These valuable resources cannot be obtained simply by submitting briefing proposals. Only through actual combat such as the Communications Competition can such strength be slowly honed.

Dialogue with industry, society and market, the future is broader

Looking back on the entrepreneurial journey, Lin Diyi believes that the most difficult part of the whole process is not technology development, but "communication". For the ESG industry that Keshu focuses on, customers are often not even sure what they want, which also requires them to spend more time to understand and analyze customer needs. Because of the experience of the past communication competition, Keshu Technology has accumulated more communication opportunities. He also encourages new startup teams to regard the communication competition as an opportunity to dialogue with the industry, society and the market, and try to change from "product-oriented" to "demand-oriented", first examine their own technology "Who will use it? Why should I use it?", and prepare data and empirical results to convince the other party.

At the same time, he also suggested that new startup teams establish a sound "business thinking" and fluent "briefing ability" as soon as possible. After all, there are many people with strong technical capabilities, but if they cannot explain their technology clearly, explain it clearly, and sell it, they cannot value.

From the laboratory to industrial practice! The WiSDON team of Yangming Jiaotong University achieved the road to entrepreneurship with the communication competition

2021 Communication Competition Networked Future Challenge Runner-up

The WiSDON team of Yangming Jiaotong University, which has won the "Networked Future Challenge Runner-up", "Qualcomm Enterprise Special Award" and "Compal Enterprise Special Award" in the 2021 Communication Competition, focuses on the O-RAN architecture of 5G communication and creates multiple innovative functional modules. It has not only won the competition, but also obtained international patents and is considered to have great potential in the field of enterprise private network applications in the 5G era. It has also obtained cooperation contracts from many manufacturers, allowing this team of teachers and students, which was originally a laboratory in the university, to transform into a startup company that creates market-worthy products.

Professor Wu Shaoxun and Zhao Xilu, the supervisors of the WiSDON team, believe that the purpose of leading students to participate in the communication competition was not to win awards, but to have a "stage" to verify whether the concepts in academic research in the past can be implemented as commercial products and services. Looking back, the decision to participate in the competition has proven to be a correct one. In addition to receiving full support from National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University, the WiSDON team has also received support from the Ministry of Education, the National Science Council, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. They have gradually accumulated sufficient technical energy and experimental field experience, allowing the research to not only remain in written reports, but to technologies that can actually be applied in the future through actual verification.

The communication competition allows students to participate in competition, face challenges, and build confidence

In the interview, the two instructors of the WiSDON team reviewed the entire process of participating in the communication competition in 2021. They believe that the school environment itself is more relaxed than the industry, so it can allow students to give full play to their talents and new technological developments from research but just staying in school, without actual verification, these research may not be able to "bear fruit", and the communication competition has become a very good stage. Through the competition, students can truly experience the process of technology development "from scratch", face real industry reviews in the process of participating in the competition, and try to prove that their ideas and their works have commercial value. It also allows students to personally experience the feeling of their works being seen and affirmed, and then build confidence in technological development. This feeling of recognition is not available in school.

Two teachers from the WiSDON team also mentioned that the students at Yang-Ming National Chiao Tung University are all very outstanding. Many of them have been "reserved" by companies before they even graduate. Students are also easily unwilling to join the ranks of start-up development because of high-salary recruitment. WiSDON allows students to actually participate in a challenge through the communications competition, and eventually make a name for themselves and achieve results. Naturally, it can also make students feel a sense of belonging to the team, and they are relatively more willing to "stay" and continue to challenge the future path of start-ups, which will also have more positive effects on Taiwans start-up environment.

WiSDON 團隊於2021年通訊大賽展示智能 O-RAN 聯網服務架構。

Starting from the competition, finding the momentum and direction of entrepreneurship

In addition to simply wanting to give it a try, the WiSDON team also admitted that the original motivation for participating in the competition was actually to set the goal of "entrepreneurship" in the future. With a try-it attitude, they wanted to see if their technology had the opportunity to land in the industry. Later, thanks to the communication competition, participating in the competition allowed the WiSDON team to gain huge media exposure and industry attention, and also allowed the team to establish connections with more potential partners. Through the results exhibition, presentations and conversations with industry teachers, the team had the opportunity to review the business model and better understand the potential and limitations of technology in the market.

Teacher Wu Shaoxun believes that students are full of creativity, but usually their ideas are not mature enough, or they do not have enough understanding of the market. These problems can actually be gradually guided, corrected, and honed during the competition. It is precisely because of participating in the communication competition that the entire team has gained valuable experience through actual combat, and has a vision that has never been seen before to understand the industry, and it has also become the momentum for the subsequent path to new entrepreneurship.

AI is not just an auxiliary development tool, but will become the core driving force for new startups

I deeply understand the real application value of AI in enterprise private networks and O-RAN architecture. In particular, in enterprise private networks, there are many scenarios that serve unmanned machines and automated systems, so the system needs to have real-time adjustment and prediction capabilities, which is exactly the field where AI can show its prowess.

At present, the WiSDON team has further used generative AI to establish a digital twin environment to simulate the radio propagation scenarios in different spaces in the enterprise field, and combined with self-developed AI control algorithms to predict communication quality before deployment and continuously optimize system performance after deployment. Such technology not only makes 5G applications closer to actual needs, but also improves deployment efficiency and stability, and solves challenges that traditional algorithms could not overcome in the past.

For the WiSDON team, AI is not only a tool to assist development, but also the core engine that drives the entire new business model they also expect students to implement AI in the process of technology research and development. Mastering such cross-domain capabilities, even a teacher-student team like WiSDON can its own technology stage in the industry.

The 2025 Communications Competition is recruiting teams to submit innovative solutions for AI, 5G, and ESG

This years communication competition still focuses on the international competition Mobileheroes Global, which is conducted in English. Every year, there are Taiwanese teams participating. The benefit of participating in international competitions is to get to know foreign teams, learn different cultural ways of observing problems and proposing solutions, and have the opportunity to find partners to expand overseas markets. Currently, international teams have signed memoranda of understanding with Taiwanese manufacturers, bringing different technologies and services, and are ready to show their talents in the Taiwanese market.

The following video is a testimony from this years organizer, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Industrial Development Administration, and the sponsoring companies, talking about how the communication competition can help teams obtain more resources. It is worth knowing.
